Basic Sailing Class

When: By appointment Thursday and Fridays (non race days).
Class size: 2-3
Time: 10am to 2PM at Half Moon Beach
Prerequisite: Study the ASA Sailing Fundamentals Book

For any Offshore Fleet members I teach the American Sailing Association (ASA) Basic Keel Boat Course in two 4 hour sessions.  You will be provide with the ASA Sailing Basics Book for you to study.  After studying the book you will have the opportunity to put your skills to the test with hands on training given on my boat.  I walk each student through the setup of the boat with each doing each activity once (setup and takedown.)

If you are fairly comfortable and weather permitting, we will go sailing and execute the major activates involved in sailing:

a. Tacking/gibing
b. Reefing under sail and handling  heavy weather
c. Man overboard exercises and use of safety equipment
d. Steering a course (Reaching a destination upwind/downwind)
e. Sailing by the Lee and the dangers involved
f. Sail shape and trim considerations based on the wind direction
g. Leaving and returning to a mooring under sail

There is much to cover and it is best broken up over two 4 hour days on the water. The cost is easy; it’s free.   The hard part is that as a student you need to study the book and you will have to put what you read in to practice.  I guarantee that you will have “learned” the basics by the end of the second day on the water and be ready to take it to the next level.
